Lime Twig’s MNotez Interview:
- MNotez: First off… what are each of your names and positions in the band?
- Lime Twig: Jeromy Heffner – Guitar, Lead Vocals
Andy Voskuil – Bass, Vocals
Jeff Bunnell – Drums, more drums
Jason “Bubba Hotep” Johnston – Lead Guitar, Vocals
- MNotez: How long have you been together? How’d you start the band?
- Lime Twig: On April 15th it will be 2 years that we have played together. It all started after a few phone calls to friends that had an interest in playing as a group. It’s nice to practice on your own, but being able to perform as a group (or team) is more fulfilling. The guys in this group are level headed and don’t tolerate flamboyant behavior. I think that is the main reason we have survived as long as we have.
- MNotez: How’d you come up with the name Lime Twig?
- Lime Twig: Lime Twig is a tool that was used for capturing or trapping birds. With that in mind, the name carries the same definition but replace the word “birds” with dreams or hope, take your pick.
- MNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musicians/band you are today? Or helped mold the music that you play?
- Lime Twig: That is a difficult question to answer. All of us come from different musical backgrounds. Jeff (our drummer) has a grunge/alternative influence that reflects on his style of play. Andy (our bassist) has a passion for classical music and developing his own electronic music through generators. He also plays clarinet for his college band and has developed great knowledge of music theory that carries over to his creative responsibilities to the band. Jason (lead guitar and our newest member) loves metal music. With that as an influence for him, it makes creative solos a breeze for him and adds a dynamic that we haven’t had before. Jeromy’s (guitar and vox) main influence is punk/alternative rock but also has great respect for all songs that have intelligent lyrics
Mix them all together and you have us.
- MNotez: What’s it like being a band in the Wisconsin music scene for you?
- Lime Twig: To sum it up in one word, “competitive.” Being a original non-cover band, it can be a little difficult to get your name and faces out there enough to build up a following. Organizing different events with other groups can be frustrating at times because everyone has set their own terms on what order to play, how long to play, and how much to get paid. That is the hard part. If you can get past the difficulties of that, most times, it is worth the trouble. We feel Wisconsin needs to create more music based venue’s rather than just playing at bars or taverns. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but you end up performing in front of a select age group and that can limit the number of people you are reaching out to. Collaborating with different venues and other bands is the tricky part. We are willing to play with anyone – anywhere
- MNotez: If you could play with any other musician or band… who would it be? (past or present)
- Lime Twig: Without the others members perspective, I will give you a safe answer(s) for each of us.
Bad Religion – Nirvana – Pantera – Rise Against
- MNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a band? Any particular message you wish to send?
- Lime Twig: Simple, just have fun! We are not pushing for a label to sign with or go on tour for months. If those opportunities arise, great! But we think the sheer enjoyment of being able to perform is a reward in itself. Just have fun with it. We all have jobs and this is our escape, not a job in itself.
- MNotez: What’s your favorite part of being in Lime Twig?
- Lime Twig: The comradery we share. Also, sharing ideas with one another and feeling satisfied with the outcome of our projects. We are all pushing 30 now (minus Jeff-23y/o) and we have reached the stages in our lives where our maturity levels allow us to work efficiently with each other without argument. Ha, Jeff too. Although he is 23, he is wise beyond his years.
- MNotez: : Out of all your songsā¦ do you have a favorite? What is it? And why?
- Lime Twig: It changes from time to time, but recently we all seem to agree that “The Other Side” is a great song that we all enjoy playing. The song is only a few months old and the music is in drop tuning which shows a heavier side to our brand. The words carry a strong message about life and the fear of dying. To sum it up in a few words; take advantage of the time you are alive and don’t let fear of death dictate how you live. It’s a good tune and hopefully we can share it with you all very soon.
- MNotez: How do you believe the internet helps the music industry or you as a band?
- Lime Twig: The internet has been great for us. It allows us to showcase our sound to everyone, anywhere. We love to hear what the listeners think of our music and have met a lot of good people who support us. MuzicNotez, for example, has been very good to us and we appreciate all of the kind words and compliments that we have received.
The internet makes unknown bands, like ourselves, able publish and promote without having a major record label.
- MNotez: What’s your process to writing music? Anybody designated as the “songwriters”?
- Lime Twig: All of the music is created by all of us collectively. Most times when we practice, one of us will start playing something that they taught themselves and we build off of that persons idea. The lyrics are written by whomever sings the song. Our songs belong to all of us and that eliminates any possibility of developing any arrogance.
- MNotez: Where do you see Lime Twig in 5 years?
- Lime Twig: Five more years of accumulated knowledge and experience. Our passion for making music, along with the fact that we are good friends; we will just be five years older and still rockin out!
- MNotez: Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message to your fans?
- Lime Twig: We would like to thank you for taking the time to get to know us a little better. Also, thanks to MuzicNotez.com for the continued support you and your staff have given us.
We would like to mention that in spring we will be starting another recording project. Keep your eyes and ears open for some of our new material. Also, stop by our profile page and add us to your friends list so that way we can communicate with you on a regular basis.
Thanks again everyone and take care,
