Glenview Lane’s MNotez Interview:

Glenview Lane: Hello everybody, we are Thom, Mike, and I’m Robbie and we play bass, drums, and guitar/voice in that order.

Glenview Lane: Life motivated us to play music. But if you’re asking what motivated us to play music together, it started with me wanting to make a full band sound out of the songs I had written with my guitar. You could say Mike and Thom both happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Glenview Lane: Glenview Lane is a road in our hometown that a dear friend of mine lives on.

MNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musicians you are today? Or helped mold the music that you play?

Glenview Lane: The first type of music I really loved was pop-punk. It had that catchy sound, and it was cool to me. The whole single guitar player/vocalist concept shaped me into a singer/songwriter. Thom, from what I know, was always a metal-head and guitar-shredder, which I believe showed him how intricate and intense music can be, which led to an appreciation of all music. Mike, unlike myself, was a born music appreciator, and was into classic rock from a young age, but has always been receptive to new sounds.

Glenview Lane: I can’t speak for everyone, and I’ve been to a lot of awesome shows, but I think I’d have to go with a show at the Bremen Cafe that I played recently, with the Vedic Eden Trio, simply because these guys were some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever seen perform live. They played with soul, which is almost always enough to put on a good show, and on top of all that they we’re improvisational and diverse. Definitely the best band in Milwaukee that I’m aware of.

MNotez: If you could play with any other musician or band… who would it be? (past or present)

Glenview Lane: O man. If this were a real life situation, I’d probably have to spend months, if not years contemplating my answer. Since I do not have that kind of time, I’ll just throw a few out there. DMB would be awesome to jam with, cuz everyone knows that regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of their music, they’re some of the best musicians in the world. Maybe a classical composer, too, like Mozart, or some old school rock stars like Zeppelin.

MNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Glenview Lane: We want the whole world to know Glenview Lane. If peaceful people can speak to the masses, maybe we can do something to make the world a better place.

MNotez: What’s the music scene like in southern Wisconsin for an up and coming band like Glenview Lane?

Glenview Lane: Not too great, though there are a few gems. Not necessarily for making a name, but if you want your music to be appreciated for what it’s worth, the Bremen Cafe is pretty great. Around here, the most prominent music venues for local bands are the bars, which are usually saturated with cover bands.

Glenview Lane: It’s hard to say, because we really love playing all of our songs, but if I had to give a definitive favorite, I suppose I’d have to say “Bibby”. It’s one of our earliest, probably the first song Mike and I ever played together, and it’s always been a crowd pleaser and fan favorite. Or maybe “Easy Flow”. But I could think about this and reconsider all day.

MNotez: How do you believe the internet helps the music industry or you as a musician?

Glenview Lane: The internet has this love/hate relationship with the music industry. It obviously can be used as a promotion tool, a record store, etc., but it also has the capability to potentially destroy the music industry. You can find any type of media you want on the internet, and 9 times outta 10, you can get it for free. Music is not an exception. The internet is great because we can obviously share our music with the rest of the world, but in that same breath, the rest of the world is caring less and less about the music on the internet because there’s just so much out there right now.

Glenview Lane: We’re hoping to release our first full length CD by the end of the year, but we’re always finding reasons to put that off, so we shall see.

MNotez: What are your goals for the band within the next year? Where do you see yourselves?

Glenview Lane: We want to expand, adding a whole slew of instrumentalists to give our sound a full, explosion of music, so the rhythm doesn’t depend on the guitar being played. Mike is moving out to Santa Barbara in November, and Robbie and Thom will be staying in the Milwaukee area. We’re hoping to continue to building a fan base in the Milwaukee area, and doing a lot more grass roots playing.

MNotez: What kind of things do you all like to do in your free time when you’re not creating music?

Glenview Lane: We like to get outdoors and hang out with Mother Nature, some of us more so than others. We like to eat, quite a bit, and we all like to chillax and spend some quality time with Mary Jane.

Glenview Lane: Love conquers all, and we’re here to love the shit outta this place.
