Interview with Hip Hop Artist Malik Elijah on new music & more
MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
Malik Elijah: To be honest with you nothing motivated me. Music is always something I felt like I need to be doing and it gives me a sense of purpose in this life.
Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
Malik Elijah: Early years before I knew hiphop I would say gogo bands like New Impressionz, Dream Team, XIB. and Gospel artist like Fred Hammond, and Tye Tribbet. I remember being a kid my dad had bought this live DVD of a Tye Tribbet set from his victory album and I would watch it constantly learning all the drums parts. When I became a pre-teen I started listening to more hiphop and R&B and I was inspired by artist like Kendrick, T-pain, Kanye, Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Drake but the list can go on and on truly.
What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
Malik Elijah: My ultimate goal is to be a full time touring and recording artist first and foremost. I also have goals of making music for movies and producing and writing for other new artist.
What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
Malik Elijah: I have two Tame Impala and Mk.Gee as of most recent.
Your latest release is the single ‘TOO LATE II’, which seems to be doing great! What inspired this track and what does it mean to you?
Malik Elijah: Shoutout jev. for showing me real genuine love and shout my A&R for making it happen. I just really believed in this record originally when I dropped it. It did okay but I really feel like this second wind its been giving with the added vocals of jev. has brought me to a new audience and people really appreciate what I knew was a great song. But we still have long ways of pushing and promoting I won’t stop til TOO LATE II is in the millions and I can go perform in a random city and people know every word.
Honestly what inspired the track was just what I am going through day to day as an artist and what I hold dear to me which is Maryland and the fanbase I have built since moving to Massachusetts.
What do you think about the current state of hip hop?
Malik Elijah: I think hiphop right now is in such a great state, there is literally something for everybody these days. So many crazy talented artist are pushing boundaries. Whether it be underground or mainstream I feel like there is diamonds throughout all the rough.
You’re finding a lot of success as an independent artist, what advice would you give to other indie artists to find success in today’s music industry?
Malik Elijah: Make music and drop that music, obviously it doesnt have to be every song but make sure you are consistently putting out something thats the only way to grow.
What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
Malik Elijah: As I continue to push my project VINTAGE NOSTALGIA we got a director’s cut coming with some new added features. Outside of that I am working on a new project and some singles for next. Hopefully I’ll be touring some cities to help push the narrative.
Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?
Malik Elijah: For all my fans I love you for sticking by me and believing so much in what I have to offer in my art. I am truly not shit without you!
