Interview with Pop Artist Cupnoodle
MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
Cupnoodle: I started singing and dancing on the dinner table at home at around 4 years old. My parents were supportive and music was something I spent my allowance money on. It was a natural interest that allowed me to be in my own world. I didn’t have a lot of friends when I was younger and singing after school in my own room instead of doing the homework was pretty much my childhood.
Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
Cupnoodle: At home, my mom had the Bee Gees, Lobo and the Beatles as well as other Thai contemporary music at that time on repeat. Plus, all the pop idols and female ballads at the time like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey were my gateway drug to vocal acrobatics. I was a singing nerd growing up, voices that moved me was instantly on repeat for a month and on to the next. Etta James, Alicia Keys and Queen would be my all time influences if I were to look back in terms of performances and songwriting.
What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
Cupnoodle: I would like to have a long, sustainable career that allow me to travel and make a living off of writing and performing my own songs. It doesn’t have to be the loudest in terms of success. But I want to prove that you can have a music career without being an influencer first. I believe in the music that I make and that good music prevails trend. The ultimate goal is to have a sold out show, whether it’s 20 people or 10,000 tickets.
What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
Cupnoodle: Love Supreme Festival back when I was interning for a music agency in London almost 10 years ago now. Saw a lot of Jazz acts and bands like Snarky Puppy and Gregory Porter.
Your latest release is the single “Bababababy”, what inspired this track? What does it’s release mean to you?
Cupnoodle: I wanted a high energy song that leans toward disco and funk but still in the pop realm. The idea is that you stutter when you like someone, in this case is when I would call someone ‘baby’. Although the concept is playful, I do want to point out that the song is a reminder for me to always try to step out of my comfort zone and if I fancy someone, I should have the balls to go up and let them know. I was a shy kid and performing on stage took me many years of pushing myself. I think that has bled into other areas of my life.
Your music has a unique sound, how would you describe it?
Cupnoodle: I would say it’s 30% Pop and 70% everything else (minus heavy metal) mush together.
You write all of your music, what is your songwriting process like? What advice would you give to other songwriters?
Cupnoodle: I either start with a concept like a phrase or a title, or a melody line on a chord progression. Nowadays, I also like writing topline on an existing track. To write about something that you feel is a unique perspective excites me. My advice is if you feel giddy or lighter after you write, keep doing it.
What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
Cupnoodle: My first body of work though I’m not releasing in conventionally. I would like to chaperon my listeners through this album. 10 songs. Every 6 weeks. You heard the 1st one, and I promise they are all of different ‘taste’. Cupnoodle is all about different flavors after all.
Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?
Cupnoodle: If I’m a noodle then my fans are my “chopsticks”, you guys lift me up and hold me together. Thank you 🙂
