MuzicNotez: What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
- Becky Raisman: I’ve been singing since elementary school, did choir at Red Oak Elementary, Edgewood Middle School, Highland Park High School and Columbia College Chicago. I started voice lessons at 15 and took them off and on. I studied Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago Class of 2007. At Columbia I joined Columbia College Singers Alliance, took keyboard 1 to learn the keyboard, sang at Manifest a huge arts festival Columbia puts on and I got to sing Buddy Guy Legends, I also collorbated on some original songs and recorded at Studio Chicago (closed in 2013). After college I sang karaoke at restaurants and bars and a few singing contests such as RJ’s Idol, Mahoney’s Road to Fame, Lake.County Idol through the Jaycees and Chick Singers Night at Abbey Pub in Chicago. I started piano lessons at Family Piano Company in Waukegan, thanks to what I learned at Keyboard 1 I remembered what I learned. In 2017 I joined School of Rock in Libertyville when they first opened for adult and and voice lessons. I loved it, my bandmates, my voice instructor just the whole atmosphere. In 2018 I moved to South Carolina unfortunately there wasn’t a School of Rock so I took keyboard lessons at Lowcountry Music Lessons for a few years, then went on to Bach to Rock for 3 years got to perform at their showcases doing cover and original songs. 2023 finally School of Rock opened right near me in Mount Pleasant, SC. Matt McFarland who runs the school with his wife Mandy told me to come to the grand opening open house so I went and Matt told me the adult band didn’t have a vocalist so I signed up right then and there. At first they didn’t have a voice teacher actually they did but the instructor had a family emergency so she couldn’t do it, then we had one in May but was there for only a month because she runs a small business in West Ashley and couldn’t run a business and do voice lessons then finally a new voice teacher named Annie and we just clicked so wèll. We have so much in common and she taught me voice warm ups that I never learned.
