Mute Choir single 'Dopamine' Artist Interviews

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.

Introduce yourselves, what are your names and rolls in the band?

  • Mute Choir: Hey, My name is Sam Arion, I write/produce the music and I play guitar keys and sing in the live show. The name Mute Choir can be misleading but it’s just me haha

MuzicNotez: How did this project come to be?

  • Mute Choir: I’ve written music for a long time and been in other bands but always was searching for my voice. I produce and write for other artists, which often requires wearing a bunch of different shoes, I struggled for a long time figuring out where I fit amongst all that, Mute Choir kind of just came out of giving my self permission to write whatever I felt like without it having to fit into a certain box.

MuzicNotez: How did you come up with the name Mute Choir?

  • Mute Choir: My 10th grade math teacher told me I’d be just about as successful as a Mute Choir

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the band you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

  • Mute Choir: Too many to distill it down to just a few. I’ve often been drawn to artists that push the envelope, and don’t quite fit in. The artists that make you scratch your head and go “Are they from the future?”

MuzicNotez: What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

  • Mute Choir: The greatest concert I’ve probably ever seen was LCD Soundsystem headlining Way Home Festival. That not only was a mind-blowing performance, but was fundamental in my understanding of what dance music can be and was a huge influence on how I incorporation electronic elements in my music.

MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a band? Any particular message you wish to send?

  • Mute Choir: I remember distinctly in grade 6 hearing someone play “Nothing To Lose” by Billy Talent and something immediately lit up in me. The sounds appealed to me, but the message and the words hit me like a brick wall. I was an angsty kid that struggled with depression and I got into music through musicians that spoke to that and helped me feel like I wasn’t alone. It sounds melodramatic to say, but music saved my life. So if there’s any particularly purpose I feel with music it’s to pay forward what it gave to me.

MuzicNotez: Your latest single is ‘Dopamine’ which was added to Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ playlist and receiving a lot of attention. How ya feeling about this positive response to your new music?

  • Mute Choir: I’m very appreciative of the positive reaction the song has gotten!

MuzicNotez: I haven’t heard anything like your music before, it’s really hard to label as any one genre. How would you describe your music?

  • Mute Choir: Haha that’s the age old question! You’re guess is as good as mine! I’ve kinda jokingly called it “organized chaos” “existential crisis funk” but I really don’t know. I listen to a variety of genres so naturally what comes out in my style is a blend. I get bored of my own music really easily so I think half of it is result of just trying to surprise myself with something that gets me excited. Often I’m chasing a feeling more than a specific sound.

MuzicNotez: What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

  • Mute Choir: I’ve been working obsessively on my next album for a couple years now. The process of making it has been intense to say the least. It’s a concept album, which is something I’ve long been a fan of and wanted to make.

I think it’s the best work I’ve ever made and I’m extremely excited to share it this fall.
