Interview with Harry Kappen Artist Interviews

MuzicNotez: What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

  • Harry Kappen: I’ve been involved with music all my life, first as a starting guitarist and later as a multi-instrumentalist and producer in and for various rockbands. I’ve been composing my own songs since I was 10 years old after I ‘borrowed’ a guitar from my sister. My sister and I have also made a lot of music together, first in a blues and rock band, and a few years ago as a duo in Kapsonic on the album of the same name. I actually don’t need that much motivation to be involved with music; it comes naturally and is part of who I am as a person. In addition to being a musician, I have also become a music therapist and work in mental health care with young people and their families. When verbal communication goes wrong, music therapy is a great way to restart that communication, but also to process trauma or break dysfunctional patterns.

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

  • Harry Kappen: I used to listen a lot to guitar heroes like Hendrix, John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck and later to great bands like Motorpsycho, Radiohead and Prince, but like so many others, the Beatles were the first to stir a lot in me. Paul McCartney influenced me, but also Bowie, Foofighters, and so on, there are so many…too many to list. I never imitated other musicians and always tried to find my own sound. And I’m getting better at that. Check last year’s full album ‘Escape’, followed by some singles: ‘Barefoot in the dew’, ‘Wargames’, ‘The freedom Inside’ etc.

MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

  • Harry Kappen: I’m recently working with an American management (MTS management group). That is a new situation for me. As a result, more people now come into contact with my music. The single ‘The Freedom Inside’ got over 200,000 views on Spotify; a huge number for me. So I will be very happy if my music is heard and appreciated by even more people. Perhaps in the future I will be able to perform in the United States with a band, the music lends itself well to that. It would be great, I like adventure.

Another wish is that I will write and/or produce for other artists. I still have a lot of music that can still be released, I don’t necessarily have to perform that myself. My ultimate goal is to be able to live off it, of course. I’m spending a great part of my time being a music therapist and I am ready for a change in my life. I would like to do music full time now.

MuzicNotez: What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.

  • Harry Kappen: The latest release is called ‘Not all of us agreed’. It is about advancing technology and its effect on personal human relationships. Technology is evolving at a frantic pace and people just have to keep up. More and more is being asked of us, while none of us have asked for it. I don’t have to lecture people so much, but I do have to make them think that they shouldn’t just accept all developments. I think there are limits to that. I posted a lyrics video on youtube.
