Interview with Jamaican Singer Tanisha P on New Album

MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.

What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

Tanisha P: My love for music started when I was just a small child, being around my father who made beats. We had a washroom that he used as a studio, and local artists were always at my house recording and creating. I was always around the creation of music. That made me love it so much. My aunts, grandmothers, sister and mother were also very active musically in the community. They performed cover songs at graduations and other events in the community. All of that exposure to music, really contributed to my love and appreciation for music. I started writing my own songs at about 7 or 8 yrs old. Even though, I never pursued music until my adult years.

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

Tanisha P: I listen to a variety or genres and artists. I enjoyed a lot of Rihanna’s songs, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, FeFe Dobson, Evanescence, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson, Destiny’s Child, Celine Dion. I could name more but these are artists who I would sing along with when I listen to their music. And just enjoying their music really fueled and inspired me. Then I have my Jamaican artists like Brick and Lace, Tami Chynn, Tessanne Chin, D’Angel and Alaine. My music is like a fusion because of this variety of influence.

MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

Tanisha P: My ultimate goal is to be a fulltime musician. From performing around the world to having my music in many films. I recently did a song for a local movie, filmed in Pensacola, Florida, called Sacred. The song is called Ruler The Pursuer. It’s not yet released to the public. But will be soon. This was my first time having a song in a film, in which I was also acting. And I hope, there will be many more ventures like this in the near future. Apart from music, acting is something I enjoy as well. And I am working on doing that fulltime as well.
I just want to say thanks to Christopher Labee (owner of Beestorm Entertainment LLC) for giving me the opportunity to start my journey in this music world under his label. And thanks to Elrico Tunstall (founder of Manager of The Year Talent Management and creator of Scared) for the opportunity to start my journey as an actress.

To everyone out there…if you have a dream that you are passionate about, don’t stop chasing it. It may seem like it’s impossible to achieve. But with hard work and dedication, it can definitely come true. Never give up! There’s nothing wrong with doing a day job while pursuing your dreams.

MuzicNotez: What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?

Tanisha P: Since I have started my music journey, I’ve had one performance so far. That was at Concert for the Cause. An event held in Pensacola, FL, in 2023. I am not much of a concert goer, but when I was still living in Jamaica, I attended Rebel Salute. This a annual music festival.

MuzicNotez: Your debut album “Emotions and Envy is being released July 21st. What can you say about this album? What can we expect from it?

Tanisha P: This album came about from a compilation of emotions I was experiencing while creating the songs, or have experienced in the past. It’s like a ride from happy to sad to hopeful. It’s not just based on one specific event in my life. It’s like a fusion of sounds, pulled from different genres I love. I say it’s R&B with a drop of my Jamaican flavor. Every song has a different feel to it. The highs and the lows of love played a vital role in the creation of this album.

MuzicNotez: You were born and raised in Jamaica before moving to America in 2011. What was the music scene like in Jamaica? How do you bring those vibes into your music now?

Tanisha P: Before I left Jamaica, I can remember a lot of Spice, Vybz Kartel and Mavado being played all over. Every party you attended, you would definitely hear Beenie Man and Future Fambo’s song Rum and Red Bull playing. So many people went to buy Clarks shoes after Vybz Kartel released his song called Clarks. This song featured Popcaan and Gaza Slim. Gyptian’s song Hold Yuh was also very popular. It was just an era of enjoyment.
While my album is mostly on the R&B side, my song Target certainly has a little aspect of dancehall to it. And as I continue to grow as an artist, I will be doing more fusion of R&B and Dancehall or Reggae.

MuzicNotez: You signed with Bee Storm Entertainment, what has that experience been like?

Tanisha P: Signing with Bee Storm Enterntainment gave the me the opportunity to actually have my songs on different platforms for the public to enjoy. I had creative freedom to express myself. We operated more as partners than just label and artist. Which I appreciated. I was always worried about signing with a label that takes my creativity away. But Bee Storm Entertainment allowed me to write my songs, choose my beats, and decide my looks for each music video. And that is definitely a plus in my book.

MuzicNotez: What else are you working o? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?

Tanisha P: Apart from doing music, I am pursuing my acting career. I play the character Nurse Meeka in the film Sacred. The pilot is out on several platforms right now. Tubi, Reveel, Prime Video, Apple Tv and Onyx. Look out for more of me in that film. There are more episodes to come. And I shall be releasing more music that pulls from my Jamaican roots.
