Pam Ross Interview Artist Interviews

MuzicNotez: What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

  • Pam Ross: I started writing songs when I was a kid. Would come up with beats in my head and put words to them. I was always running around singing my songs. I started playing guitar when I was 15 or 16 and eventually started putting music to my lyrics.

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

  • Pam Ross: I have a wide range of influences. My mom was big into classic country music like Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and folks like that. My sisters and brother were a lot older than me and they were into rock and were listening to Elton John, Led Zepplin, and Springsteen, and other artists like that. So, I had this spectrum of influences when I was young. When I got older, Van Halen was huge to me. Eddie was, and still is, my guitar hero. I also got into Nirvana, Pink Floyd, John Mellencamp, and Sound Garden.

Each genre and artist has something special that stands out to me and helped influence me. I loved Van Halen and Pink Floyd for the amazing guitar work. Elton / Bernie, Springsteen, Melloncamp, and the classic country artists told great stories in their songs. I was also drawn to the agressivness of grunge. There was a lot passion on the genre. It was very real.

MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

  • Pam Ross: I want to make a decent living playing and writing songs. Either having myself get signed by a record company and making my songs hits or have another artist record them and make them hits. I guess I really just want to have some hit records. It would be really cool to be the one who makes my songs a hit but I really would be OK if other artist did that for me. As long as I’m making music for a living, I’ll be happy.

MuzicNotez: What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.

  • Pam Ross: Two Shots of Tequila is my latest release. This one leans more in the americana / alt-country direction. I was going through a break-up at the time and told myself one way or another I was going to get through this. Most sad songs are saying, “Oh, my life is over….my heart is broken and I’ll never recover, my world has ended…blah, blah, boo-hoo.” So, I decided to write something a little different. It’s about recognizing the pain and knowing you’ll survive. People change, things don’t always work out as planned, but I’ll get through this. I was trying to take a strong, positive approach to what I was going through. It was a hard song to write because I was really going through a lot of pain, but I refused to let myself be beaten.

For me, this is actually an old song. I dusted it off in late 2021 and thought it was good but needed a rewrite. It took me awhile, but I eventually rewrote 50% of the music and about 85% of lyrics. It turned out much better..
