MuzicNotez: What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
- See Your Shadow Songwriting – Artistic Director Michael Coleman: Well I have always had a love for the arts, but when I first started actually writing songs, I mean original stuff, it was parody, I think I did my first one when I was like 12 or 13. That stuff was me just fooling around. I also did my own custom remixes of song around that age as well or maybe I was a little older. Fast forward to modern times and I started actually writing songs professionally and set out on a career after I had a milestone birthday, I won’t share which one that was, but I had that milestone birthday and that was the motivation for me to start utilizing my talent that was going to waste.

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
- Michael Coleman: Oh this is a good question and there are so many. Too many to name here. I was that kid literally listened to everything. Most people of color at that time were staunch R n B, or Soul, but my record, tape, CD collection which I still have to this day had that, but it also had NuWave (Missing Persons, New Order, The Cure, Erasure), hard rock (Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Scorpions, AC/DC) I even have Air Supply in my collection and of course classic country and Motown and the Atlantic Sound were really prevalent and of course disco. That is why I believe the See Your Shadow Catalog is so special as it has all different genres in it, representing all of the music I love, which is everything.
MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
- Michael Coleman: The music See Your Shadow creates is my legacy as well as all of the artistic stuff I do. Of course everyone wants to have the mega hit, but there is so much more than that. I think it would be really cool to have a total stranger tell me how much one of my pieces had an impact on them. To me, that is the reason I do what I do with the gifts that I have been given which are all natural and comes without any technical training.
The main message behind See Your Shadow’s work is that it is okay to feel. Our music makes people think and feel as we write about things you don’t particularly hear about in modern music and exploring those themes, making people feel emotion is our signature.
MuzicNotez: What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.
- Michael Coleman: Our latest song is the lead single from our double album retrospective. The song is called, “Take It To Your Grave”. It is a real life dramatic ballad that tell the story of a man who fathers his best friend’s son and the anguish a situation like that can cause.
