Artist Interviews

MuzicNotez: What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?

  • Cory M. Coons: Thank you so much for this opportunity! My motivation for creating music has always been passion. I have always loved the creative element in writing and recording songs. I grew up listening to music on my mother’s old stereo and listening to local radio stations in Eastern Ontario, and have really never looked back. I was about 13 when I started plying bass guitar and acoustic guitar. I started writing my own lyrics and melodies shortly after that around the late 1980’s to early nineties.

MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?

  • Cory M. Coons: Many influences. The Beach Boys & Brian Wilson, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Styx/ Tommy Shaw, Bryan Adams, Keith Urban and all kinds of melodic radio rock from the 70’s and 80’s right up to current music. It’s all part of the CMC sound and melting pot! ๐Ÿ˜‰

MuzicNotez: Whatโ€™s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?

  • Cory M. Coons: Basically to resonate with and reach as many people as I can, with the hopes of bringing a positive message in my music to the world. I feel the world needs more honesty in music today, and not the cookie cutter, corporate stuff of the business “Machine”. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Most people can see right through it if it isn’t honest, and touches home. I like to remember where I was when I first heard a certain song, and I think you’re doing your job right as a musician and songwriter if you can hit the heart strings of someone and resonate with them! ๐Ÿ™‚

MuzicNotez: What’s the latest release of yours? Tell us about it.

  • Cory M. Coons: My latest single is called “Long Hard Rain”.

I think it gives you the impression of a tumultuous time, with a sense of foreboding, sort of like a darker cloud of emotions or energy hanging over one’s mind and spirit of things to come. The title can represent a feeling of dismay and uneasiness of impending, troubling times or relationships. The chorus takes you down the road of the character being beaten down, both spiritually, or possibly even romantically also…
Reflecting, and holding on to heartbreak with a “tough love” discipline, while holding out for love, and at the same time being set free from emotional bondage.”

My good friend Marc Muir produced it again this time in Cornwall, ON, Canada… We also had our good friend and MTS Label-mate Ed Roman send us some great hammond b-3 style organ stuff that we edited and mixed in, in some places! Marc also did a lot of additional instrumentation as well, like Bass, atmospheric guitar stuff, electric piano and filler organ in spots too. And I got to play the main guitar solo this time, (like a Mike Campbell/Tom Petty style guitar solo vibe). ๐Ÿ˜‰ along with acoustic and rhythm electric as usual. I re-connected with my long time friend and drummer Kevin Eamon as well, (whom I’ve worked with both live and in studio over the years,) tracked the drums this time out.
