MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.
What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
- Evan Croft: Music has always been a big part of my life. I started singing when I was 10 years old and enjoyed it. When I was 18, I got inspired by Kevin Ross to be a songwriter seeing a live performance of his on TV. Since then, I’ve been singing and writing every single day.
MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
- Evan Croft: My top five artists that influence me are Michael Jackson, 2pac, Chris Brown, Logic and Ne-Yo.
MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
- Evan Croft: My goal is to inspire others to be themselves no matter what others say. I want people to feel real emotions listening to my music. Growing up, I’ve seen people become something they’re not happy with and I want to be the voice that let’s them know ‘it doesn’t have to be that way’. It’s never too late to do what you love.
MuzicNotez: What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
- Evan Croft: The greatest concert I performed at was the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto, Ontario. There were thousands of audience members and I even met new artists that inspire me to keep going with my craft.
MuzicNotez: Your latest release is the single ‘When You’re Ready (Remix)’, how would you describe this track?
- Evan Croft: This song I wrote in 2017 to be a closing song for my mixtape ‘The Ladies of my Life’. The original version featured a young rapper named Nakattaq, but even though I was told it had a lot of potential, I was also told that version didn’t sound properly mixed and could sound more exciting. In 2021, I decided to take my reviewers words and make a new version with a new verse.
This version still has the same message in the original, me giving a girl all the reasons why I’d be perfect for her and to let me know when she’s ready to give me a shot.
MuzicNotez: How do you write your music?
- Evan Croft: I start with the chorus because that’s the main message I want to convey in the song. Next is the verses where I tell the main idea the song. After that, I add the little bits that make the song sound perfect: harmonies, adlibs, even a bridge.
MuzicNotez: What’s your production process like?
- Evan Croft: When I finish the lyrics, I sing along to a metronome. When I find a tempo I like, I make the necessary adjustments and make a demo beat on the GarageBand app. After that, I send it over to my friend who makes beats and we go back-and-forth until we create something we like.
MuzicNotez: What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
- Evan Croft: Expect one more single from me this year. After that, I’ll have a compilation album which will be ready for the new year.
