Grace Freeman’s new single “Oliver” is a lilting acoustic tune with perfectly placed soundscapes of sad accordion breaths (or is it a harmonium the lady uses?). This singer/songwriter who has opened for the likes of Macy Gray, Suzanne Vega and Donavon Frankenreiter employs a minimalist approach to this very sweet ode.
The little girl vocal approach and the stunted playing might not appeal to all – this is an artist with a singular sound to be sure – and the doubled vocal key change near the tail end of the song comes a bit too late as far as “Oliver” overstaying its effectiveness. Still Grace Freeman provides a certainly unique sound.
