Set to release on March 2nd, the debut single from songwriter Michael Armstrong is something of a throwback to a bygone era of songwriting. A double-A side of two tracks which spin tales of relateable feelings and situations, it proves that the modern pop trend of style over substance has not taken over the business completely.
Influenced by the likes of Steely Dan and the Eagles, this is pop music which reminds you of yesteryear. It doesn’t sit comfortably alongside the current crop of pop artists, and nor should it – it’s the work of a man who has life experience to bring to the table, and its reflected in his lyrics.
‘The Radio Years’ is the first half of the release, telling the story of how Michael Armstrong grew up loving the songs on the radio. The second, ‘Back to Work’, tells the story of how he (in his previous career) would have to face the daily journey to work in a job that became monotonous. Both songs prove that this writer is a storyteller who is not conforming to modern expectation and is writing songs he wants to here.
This kind of independent approach is to be commended, and we hope it is as successful as possible.
