Laura’s skills as a solo folk/pop acoustic artist have continued to grow and change over the years, and her main strength is her vocal versatility and range. Her music has elements of power contained in that of Ani Difranco and Alanis Morrisette, but also strains of subtle beauty comparable to Jewel and Sarah McLachlan. She is a strong rhythm guitarist who incorporates finger style guitar into her intros and leads. Her years of experience learning music allowed her to achieve her dreams of playing the local club circuit and producing her own music. It is hoped that her talent and perseverance will allow her to reach the next level. She contacted local musician Russel Martin, inquiring about playing at Maxwell’s Brew. Russel became a mentor for Laura, exposing her to Toledo’s music scene, and giving her advice on how to be a successful local musician. During this time, Laura played open mics at The Bottle Rocket (now closed) and Mano’s. In addition, Russel allowed her to sit in for him during his gigs at The Bronze Boar in Toledo and The Easystreet Café in Bowling Green, Ohio. Russel assisted Laura in recording her first demo, It’s Always Somethin’, which she submitted to record companies. Laura began playing her own gigs at Maxwell’s Brew and The Bronze Boar in 2004. Additionally, she continued writing songs and produced another demo, China Doll, which is available online at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sailer . Later, Laura participated in Tower 98’s Karaoke Idol contest, placing as third runner-up in the final qualifying competition. Fox 36 Toledo News also did a piece on Laura’s accomplishments as a musician for their weekly segment Toledo Idol. She was well-received by the public, and by the beginning of 2005 had booked her own performances at Toledo venues like Rick’s Coffeehouse, Shawn’s Irish Tavern, Brewed Awakenings, The Durty Bird, Buckshots, Sodbuster, Mickey Finn’s, and more. Laura then collaborated with other musicians to form a band and produce a full-length demo to shop to major labels. Between Dreams and Sleep was released in 2007, and a song from the album, China Doll, was featured on local radio station The Zone’s “Homegrown Zone.” The album received rave reviews that year from local periodical, The Toledo City Paper. |
