YolanDa Brown – April Showers, May Flowers: Live Sessions – Out 29th July 2013
One of the UK’s top saxophonists, YolanDa Brown is a musician the UK can be proud of exporting around the world. Her style is flawless and smooth, her playing is consistently brilliant and her skill on the technical side is among the best in the world.
All of which comes across with this excellent live album, captured at a recent gig celebrating the release of original album ‘April Showers, May Flowers’. That release was very well received, and – with the live environment lending an air of authenticity – this one is set to be just the same.
See for example the technical saxophone playing that layers against the keyboards on the straight shuffle of ‘Fine Line’. Contrast that with the languid, smooth, slow build of ‘Without You’ (one a few tracks which include vocals). YolanDa Brown is clearly a musician who is comfortable with her instrument, whatever it demands of her – all the more impressive for the quality of her live delivery.
