Even if you’re not a fan of the classical arts you will still find yourself appreciating the extraordinary talents of South African flautist Marlene Verway in her debut album ‘A Flute Affair’. Born on a remote farm in the north-west of South Africa and progressing through sheer musical gift to study under many of the renowned artists of the world including New York’s Jeanne Baxtresser, Italy’s Raffaele Trevisani, musicians from The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and even the British Youth Opera. Verwey was soon recognized for her aptitude and skill by gaining the hugely coveted Artist Diploma from the Royal College of Music, becoming prize winner at the International de Lorenzo flute competition and being crowned victor in the 2004 SAMRO International Scholarship. This young lady as plenty to show for her exceptional expertise in the art of the flute, an unusual and emotion provoking instrument, and it is notably deserved.

‘A Flute Affair‘ is a 15 track album comprised with the works of Romberg and Hahn as well as Mozart and Handel, it is wonderfully put together and our lovely Marlene does it complete justice with her absolutely first-class skill with the magnificent flute accompanied by Charles du Plessis on the piano.

As previously said you do not have to be a fan of classical music to appreciate this remarkable album, thanks to radio and television advertising you will find many of these tracks familiar and you will certainly find yourself fully taken in by the beauty and wonder the flute is able to create in the mind’s eye.
