Series of absolutely amazing coincidences? Or best kept conspiracy by Pink Floyd? Throughout the years people have debated whether the synchronization of “Dark side of the Moon” to “The Wizard of Oz” is a coincidence or a conspiracy… and nobody truly knows the answer. Members of Pink Floyd all deny it… however Roger Waters (the main writer of Dark side) has been caught acknowledging that it was planned however has stayed inconspicuously quiet about that ever sense.

No matter what the answer is… you can’t deny that it does synch up in a lot of major ways. Anybody who is a fan of Pink Floyd… has to at least watch this phenomenon for themselves and make their own judgment, if nothing else you’ll at least enjoy it because of the fact that Dark side is on one of the best albums known to man.
It could be that the album is so psychedelic and emotional that it could match up with a lot of things… however with how technical the album is that’d be a real coincidence. Roger Waters wrote a good deal of the album so it’s also possible that he planned it to synch up without the rest of the band knowing and that’s why they’ve denied it all these years. Or they could just deny it because if admitting it that would take away from the legend of this great conspiracy.
But who knows! This could be debated all day back and forth… so let’s just get down to how it synch’s up according to us… and you can decide for yourself.

How to synch “Dark Side Of The Moon” with “The Wizard of Oz”

• Start the album exactly as the black and white MGM lion roars for the 3rd time.
• To make sure you got this right make sure the first synch up example listed below matches up.
• Also you can purchase a copy of this on DVD where it’s all synched up already for you! (that’s what I did)

Similarities between album and film:

Breathe

• The first major synch is the lyric “Balanced on the biggest wave” as Dorothy’s balancing on the fence to ultimately fall in the pig pen.

On The Run

• On the Run starts as Dorothy falls. Notice the theme of the music as everyone panics and is frantic to help Dorthy up and out of the pig pen.
• The back round talking voices appear to synch up with the conversation between everybody.
• The thunder at the end of the song when the camera shoots to the sky foreshadowing the storms to come.

Time

• The ringing of bells is heard as “Time” starts and the lady enters on her bike.
• Such ominous music as Dorothy is being told to give Toto back to this mean lady… whom also plays the part of the “Wicked witch of the West”!
• Music becomes rejoiceful as soon as Toto jumps back into Dorothy’s arms.
• “No one told you when to run” as Dorothy is running away from home with Toto.



• During the guitar solo, you will see the fortune teller’s sign. It reads “Past, Present, and Future”.
• During the reprise of “Breathe”, notice Dorothy’s reaction to the fortune teller, like she’s being foretold something great. There’s no place like “home, home again”.

Great Gig in the Sky

• The song starts as Dorothy leaves the fortune teller.
• “I’m not frightened of dying, anytime will do, I don’t mind” as Dorothy soon faces her near death experience.
• Notice how the camera angles change with the music.
• The singer (Clare Torry) epically sings in tune with Dorothy’s panic during the tornado. Almost like every pitch changes with the emotion of the scene perfectly. (My favorite part of the whole film… always amazes me!)



• The singer slows down as the window hits Dorothy in the head and she goes into a dream.
• Why is it called the “Great Gig in the Sky”? Could it be that the house is flying around in the sky? Or the storm in the sky?
• The song ends as Dorothy leaves the house.

Money

• Money starts “CHI CHING” (coin drops) exactly when Dorothy opens the door to this amazingly colorful place.
• The whole fact that the song is called money… and this all seems like such a rich fantasy area.
• The saxophone starts exactly when the good “Witch of the East” arrives into the scene.
• The munchkins dance to the beat of the guitar solo.
• At the end of the song, you hear spoken “I don’t know; I was really drunk at the Time”. Isn’t there a rumor that the munchkins were all drunks? That’s why they marched out of step?

Us and Them

• Song starts out all ominous to the man with the “certificate of death”
• Ballerinas enter to “Us… Us… Us…”
• Music picks up as everybody starts to rejoice and celebrate.
• “Which is which” while there’s two witch’s in the scene
• “Black… Black… Black…” as the (black) wicked witch of the west enters the scene.



• “Blue… Blue… Blue…” for Dorthy’s blue dress?
• “Down… Down… Down” as the other witch with the slippers goes down and disappears.
• “Haven’t you heard it’s a battle of words” as the witch of the east and west have an argument.
• Munchkins appear to dance to the music again.
• “Down and out” as the witch of the east goes away.
• Music picks up again as Dorothy starts to march onto the yellow brick road and the munchkins rejoice.

Any Colour You Like

• Funky music begins as new scene begins for her journey down the yellow brick road.
• Scarecrow appears to dance to the song.
• And it’s just the perfect funky ridged riff for a funky scarecrow to dance to!
• Any “colour” you like… and this is the first movie that came out in color.

Brain Damage

• “The lunatic is on the grass” the scarecrow seems like kind of a lunatic… And he’s filled with grass… hmm
• Scarecrow sings “If I Only Had a Brain” (in the movie) and the corresponding songs called “Brain Damage”.
• “Got to keep the loonies on the path” the yellow brick road IS a path, and it starts just before they start marching down it.
• Music picks up as Dorothy and the scarecrow get up from the ground to jump in the air and dance.
• “Thunder in your ear” as the tree’s are yelling at Dorothy and the scarecrow.

Eclipse

• Dorothy pounds on the tin mans chest looking for a heart beat and the heart beat in the song begins again as the albums finishes up.

Other noticeable coincidences:

• “The Wizard of Oz” was the first movie to come out in color… and it starts out in black and white… than goes into color. The album cover for “Dark Side Of The Moon” is a prism where black and white color go into the prism and comes out as all the colors of the rainbow on the other side.
• “Somewhere over the rainbow” from the movie vs. the rainbow coming out of the prism on the album cover.
• The fact that the movie was a display of technological advances in film at the time with it being in color, and the album was a display of technological advances at the time with the new studio features and recording techniques used throughout the album.
• The lyrics “Everything under the sun really is in tune” from the album fit in well with the whole idea of synchronizing the movie with the album.

Granted… a lot of these coincidences are more emotion of the music vs. the scene in the movie, however isn’t that what music is all about? If I were to write an album in synch with something a great deal of the matching up would be the emotion of the music I play with the situations, not specific lyrics calling it out.
Also skeptics might wonder why the album would end in the middle of the movie if it’s supposed to match up… however if it perfectly matched up… this wouldn’t really be a debated legendary myth… it’d be a fact at that point…losing all it’s magic. So you would want it to stop short of the movie, and wouldn’t want the whole thing to perfectly match up or else it’s not as phenomenal as it is.
It’s the continual debate of this subject… the skepticism of the myth… and the profound “coincidences” that have intrigued so many about this, evolving it to be the legend that it is today. No matter what if you’re a fan of Pink Floyd you have to watch this for yourself, because it really is a unique and amazing experience. I don’t know for sure if its coincidence or a well kept conspiracy theory… however I do know it’s pretty awesome! So watch it for yourself and let us know what you think, you won’t be disappointed.
