MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.
Introduce yourselves, what are your names and positions in the band?
Western Avenue: Thanks for having us! We are Western Avenue, a contemporary country group from Central Ontario Canada. Matt Williams (Vocals & Guitar), Nikki English (Vocals)& Keith Robertson (Vocals & Guitar). Let’s have some fun!
MuzicNotez: What motivated you all to start creating music?
Western Avenue: The motivation came from a sit-down conversation we had in March 2012. We had been a cover band for 5 years & we all had created songs in the past. We decided that day that we were going to record a song (Highway Headin’ Out of Town) & see how it turned out. We were blown away with how Newcomb Studios produced the song so we decided to do an EP Album. The rest is history… haha
MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the band you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
Western Avenue: All of our musical influences vary soo much! Collectively we all love bands like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac, Keith Urban, Sugarland. Anything with sing-along verses & arena-rock choruses!! Nikki’s influences stretch all the way back to watching Disney movies, Keith’s = all old country tunes, Matt = Celtic music & singing Take Me Out To The Ball Game a million times with my Mom when I was 3 years old (ha!).
MuzicNotez: How did you come up with the name Western Avenue?
Western Avenue: It’s one of those things that sometimes I wish there was a better story behind it… haha. Our initial practices were on a street called Western Avenue. We were looking for a band name & I was driving to rehearsal and thought “Hey…Western Avenue would be a cool name”. Kind of has that country-roots undertone to it. Got to rehearsal & told Nikki & she said that she had been thinking the same thing! From that moment on, we were Western Avenue!
MuzicNotez: Your first original single was “Highway Headin’ Outta Town”, where did the motivation come from for this song?
Western Avenue: This will go down as one of the defining “line-in-the-sand” moments for us. Up until the time we decided to release “Highway” as a single we had been strictly a cover band that had dabbled in song-writing. Highway’s lyrics came from Dave Woods. This song is about following your dreams & has really resonated with people around the globe. We’re so thankful that Dave gave us this great song!
MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
Western Avenue: Our ultimate goal is to reach as many people as we possibly can throughout the World! We believe a lot of our music has the potential to uplift people & help them achieve goals & dreams that they want to experience in their own lives. The one thing that keeps me striving every day is the fact that we can help inspire people. I love hearing stories about how a song has meant a lot to a fan or friend. That adds fuel to my tank & keeps me energized!
MuzicNotez: What’s your song writing style like? Is anybody in particular the main writers?
Western Avenue: Song writing for us varies with each song. We have partnered with an amazing lyricist Dave Woods who wrote half of the lyrics on our debut CD. The songs that Nikki brings to the table always have Dave’s lyrics involved. Nikki & Keith obviously work very closely together (the joys of being married…haha). For myself & Keith, we usually come to the table with full songs ready to go & just need production input. We are all over the map when it comes to song writing.. haha
MuzicNotez: You’re currently recording an EP, when can we expect this to be released, and how’s the recording going?
Western Avenue: We actually just started with pre-production for a few songs that we’ll release as singles in 2014. As for an EP, we have nothing in the works right now but you never know! The way the industry is going, we are more satisfied with releasing singles & then when we have enough singles, we’ll package them together in an album form. All killer & no filler!
MuzicNotez: This is just the beginning for your music career, so what lies ahead for you? What can we expect?
Western Avenue: We are super pumped up to be releasing our first single “Wherever You Are” to the US & Europe on September 3rd! In addition to that we are working on some pre-production right now for singles that will be released in 2014. We’re also extremely excited about our contract with MTS Management! Lots of things going on in WA-land right now! haha
MuzicNotez: Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?
Western Avenue: That we are soo grateful for your support! We love you guys & hope we can get to your city soon!
