Interview with Alternative Latin Artist Catalina Ammaturo
MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us. What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
Catalina Ammaturo: Ohhh Its my pleasure! Before we start I’d like to thank you for inviting me to be a part of your magazine and I also want to apologize for my english, haha. Since it’s not my first language I’ll probably make some mistakes here and there…
So, I started playing piano when I was 8 years old and that was basically how everything started for me.
My parents have always been a bit old fashion and when I started showing interest on being a musician as a little kid, they took me to classical piano lessons and I learned, pretty much, everything that shaped me as a songwriter. With time I learned that putting together some chords allowed me to create songs and I’ve been doing it ever since. It became my coping mechanism kinda. I have written a song about everything that has ever happened to me.
Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
Catalina Ammaturo: I just admire sensitive confident woman who allow themselves to be honest to what they feel, even if it’s not the prettiest of feelings. Lana will always be my first answer because I carry her in my heart ever since I’ve been a teen girl. I used to be a bit conflicted with the fact that I just wrote sad songs about heartbreaks and I feel like she showed me that there is something truly beautiful about giving in to the sadness and giving people a place of comfort with it.
Amy has always been on my mind while creating too. She always lead the way for me on how to just be unapologetically myself. I owe those two all of my discography honestly, I have them tattooed too hahaha. Also adore Fiona Apple, Suki Waterhouse, Marilina Bertoldi, Lucia Zambetti, Nessa Barret.

What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
Catalina Ammaturo: Well, I actually feel like my goal changed when my career started growing. When I started putting out songs I really just did it because it was what I wanted to do all my life… But as I started gaining listeners and started doing shows, I got to feel the people receiving the songs with so much love and that just did it for me. I love giving people a little home with my songs, you know? Or just a new point of view of how the ugly stuff that we all go through is maybe more common than we think it is. When I create records I try to create the universe I was living in when I wrote it: Thematically, sonically, visually… You just get to see we’re I’ve been with them and I truly just enjoy creating that and letting people live it too.
What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
Catalina Ammaturo: Oh god that’s such a hard question. I’ve recently went to the Eras Tour when Taylor came to Argentina and that was one of the craziest things I have ever and will ever see, that’s for sure.
I also had a very cute memory with an Argentinian artist called Marilina Bertoldi that I adore. She played on a free festival in Buenos Aires and I wanted to see her for a while.
I was at the festival with my friends who went to see other artists that were playing there too and they didn’t care much about Marilina playing, at least not like me. The time of her show was also very late and we were there since the morning so, for when her show was coming up, all of my friends wanted to leave and I just told them to head back home with no worries.
I sat on the grass, turned off my phone and waited for her set, alone. It was my first time at a concert alone and that was something I’ve always wanted to experience and life just gave it to me in that moment there.
When her set was about to start, I walked to the closest spot to the stage I could find and ended up literally in front of the stage.
And then her show started and oh my god… she was wonderful. I was stunned, she started with a powerful, full-band rock set and here in Argentina, the crowds can get very crazy and we were all just jumping and rocking with her. We call that the “pogo” haa.
When the show was ending, the band left and she played alone in her electric guitar and some pedals, a beautiful version of my favorite song of hers, “Enterrarte”. I cried the whole way through. It was a cute little moment I had with myself haha… I’ll always remember that.
You’re latest release is the single ‘Caminar en Cristal’, what inspired this track? What’s it mean to you?
Catalina Ammaturo: It’s about a situationship I’ve been having the past year of my life… lol. I wrote the song when I was absolutely done with this guy because he was just not giving me what I wanted and needed.
Its a very sassy song about just realizing you’re not being treated how you know you deserve and it’s actually my first song channeling that type of empowerment, so I was kinda scared that people were not gonna feel it but, luckily they did.
You are from Argentina, what is the music scene like there for an emerging artist?
Catalina Ammaturo: Right now, there’s a scene in Argentina that we call the “Under” that has been going for the past three or four years…
Its a grungy-dark-rock vibe that I really like. Sounding a bit like The Cure or Joy Division.
With bands like “Mujer Cebra”, “Winona Riders”, “Kill Flora” or “Nenagenix”. Those are my favorite bands from that scene. There’s also some Indie stuff going on for the past few years too. My favorite Argentinian Indie band is “El Mato A Un Policia Motorizado” (crazy
name, right?). The singer has a voice which is to die for. He is my dream collaborator for sure.
You’ve found a lot of success as an independent artist. What advice would you give to other indie artists to find success?
Catalina Ammaturo: Hm… I would say: Find your own voice before starting. Sonically and lyrically. That’s and advice I wish someone would have gave me when I was starting.
Explore who you are and what you wanna say and how you want to say it. And once you know that, show it to the world, proudly. Live it like you tell it, live it truly. The listeners need to hear you say something that you are really meaning for them to be able to believe it.
What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
Catalina Ammaturo: Im doing an EP and an album right now. Both cover very different stories and sounds and Im obsessed with both of them. This year, I’ll release the EP, the album will take some more time and im sure it will be worth it.
Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?
Catalina Ammaturo: My next single “Y Nada Sirve” is coming soon! Hehe. Thank you for having me MuzicNotez! I had fun!
